Remembering the forgotten Eritrean nationalists of the 1950s

31 Aug 2018

To mark the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Eritrean Liberation Movement (ELM or Harakat), itsmembers should be remembered by the Eritrean people and future generations. On this occasion, the victims of the 1958 general strike should be remembered also by the Eritrean people. The strike  was organised by the members of Eritrean Workers' Association.  Sadly, the strike was brutally crushed by the security force on the 10th March 1958.

Press Release

27 Jun 2018

Last 8 June 2018, the Executive Committee in a statement to media outlets had stated that the Eritrean National Salvation Front had welcomed the Ethiopian governing coalition’s declaration to accept the Algiers Accord, and hence duly carry out the rulings of the Boundary Commission. We did not; moreover, let the occasion pass without voicing our curiosity as to whether or not the autocratic regime in Asmara would positively or negatively react to the step the Ethiopians have taken. Pressures exercised or incentives promised notwithstanding aimed at enticing the regime to interact with Ethiopia’s decision, the regime announced on June 20 to had accepted the offer, with an intention to dispatch a delegation included, to discuss the matter, which we considered as a positive measure to take.

It has also withdrawn from the border town of Badme itself, which the boundary commission, established by Algiers Peace Agreement, awarded to Eritrea, and which Ethiopia refused to give up until early June – when the 36 members executive committee of the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front under the chairmanship of prime minister Abiy Ahmed decided to accept the Algiers peace agreement in all its forms including the decision on Bademe.

Remembering Dehab Tesfatsion and her comrades On the Martyrs' day 20th of June

Dehab and her comrades are never mentioned by the Diasporas human rights activists, civil society, youth associations, and women associations etc which are either affiliated to the opposition groups or independent associations/organisations. On Martyrs' Day, it is very painful for the families of the fallen martyrs to be reminded that they were never officially told about the deaths of their loved ones when, in 1993, the then Provision Government of Eritrea announced their names.  Hopefully, Dahab and her comrades will be remembered in future by the young generation.

Ethiopia’s Move to End Border Stalemate Could Bring Change in Eritrea

09 Jun 2018

A map of Eritrea and Ethiopia depicts the border between the countries based on an international ruling in 2002. Each country disputed portions of the ruling but agreed to accept the terms in full. But Ethiopia prevented demarcation of the border, resulting in 16 years of unresolved tension between the countries. In June 2018, the Ethiopian government said it would agree to implementing the terms of the 2002 ruling in full.

Eritrea has long said the border issue justified restrictions on its citizens, including mandatory national service, a diversion of resources into the military, curtailed civil liberties and the uninterrupted rule of President Isaias Afwerki, the unelected leader of the country since 1993.

ENCDC ASSEMBLING ITS BRANCH OFFICES, AND SOON TO HOLD ITS SECOND NATIONAL CONGRESS

15 Jul 2018

As Prime Minister Abiye Ahmed returns from the historic visit to Eritrea, a long letter from ENCDC containing appreciations, views, and requests, awaited him at home. We wished him good luck when he left, and we wish him well now with his peace, love and democracy vision for the entire continent. We believe Dr. Abiye had learned a lot from the Eritrean people, and the government that doesn’t represent them. Issayas Afewerki seemed to enjoy the new topics of love, forgiveness, unity, openness (Perestroika), the issue of bilateral cooperation, and completely abandoned the Algiers Agreement of border demarcation which he used to freeze negotiations for the pasts 16 years. Issayas is now coming to Addis Ababa to join the new venture of “Unity” “Medemer” for the purpose of his own old dream, and not embracing the general concept of harmony addressed by PM Abiye. Eritreans are now left with countless tasks to achieve our own national unity- “Hagerawi Hadnet, Whda’t Al Wetenya” and join Abiye in the regional peace cooperation of all nations concerned. ENCDC and the opposition are entering a new stage of reality which should be carefully assessed and immediacy tackled by restructuring offices and calling for an immediate convention of its 2nd National congress

Rejecting the talk about “federation” in Ethio-Eritrean relations does not mean that the two countries should not have realistic forms of cooperation that are mutually beneficial in all fields or even economic integration (whatever name it is given), given the fact that the two countries badly need each other to survive and prosper. This will lead us to two fundamental questions that the remaining part of this piece will be focusing on.
