They are protesting against the visit by the Eritrean governments envoy to the EU while they are demostrating in Gothenburg for the release of Dawit Isaak. Girma Asmerom , Eritrea's ambassador, arrived in Gothenburg yesterday to speak to regime-friendly Swedish-Eritreans. The reason? To awaken public opinion against the UN sanctions agreed on December 23, 2009. The regime’s vies is that to have Eritreans come out in huge demonstrations against the UN sanctions on 22 February 2010. However, outside the People's House in Backa in Hisingen, waited about 30 demonstrators gathered to protest against the regime in Eritrea. When the EU Ambassador arrived at the (venue place) he snuck into the back door of the People's House. Thus he avoided the protesters at the entrance and slipped into the back door. “It shows what type he is"said one of the demonstrators. A large police force was in place, but was never needed to help out with the demonstrators. The demonstrators wore placards with pictures of Eritreans who are in prison without trial. Keleta Zehaie, one of the demonstrators, dreams of return to a free Eritrea. - I want to ask the ambassador what he thinks all these Eritreans are doing here in Sweden if there had been freedom to return home. The newly established association named Swedish-Eritrean Association for Democracy and Justice organized the demonstration. One of the founders of the association is Dawit Isaak Esayas brother Isaac Isaak. He is demonstrating outside the People's House. It feels unpleasant. Girma Asmerom is one of those responsible for the situation. He belongs to the party. Therefore it is important to highlight, to be here to demonstrate against him and what he represents. The purpose of the demonstration was not to show support of UN sanctions. Many misinterpret our demonstration that we would be for penalties. We are for freedom and democratic rights in Eritrea, and those political prisoners and journalists should be released, says Esayas Isaak. afpS
