My Memoir of the Eritrean Student Movement in Egypt, 1950-1966

This memoir documents a pivotal yet underexamined chapter in modern Eritrean history—the intellectual, political, and cultural role of Eritrean students in Egypt during the formative years between 1950 and 1966.
Drawing on lived experience, eyewitness testimony, and historical reflection,
My Memoir of the Eritrean Student Movement in Egypt, 1950 -1966, offers a rare insider account of how a generation of young Eritreans carried the cause of national identity, political awareness, and liberation beyond the borders of their homeland.
The book traces the emergence of the Eritrean Student Union in Cairo, the first organization of its kind, which predates similar associations both inside Eritrea and abroad, and arose at a time when no comparable student union existed even in Ethiopia. Despite its foundational influence, this movement has remained largely absent from scholarly documentation.
Written by a participant-observer and translated from Arabic, this work bridges memoir and historiography, preserving a critical narrative of collective struggle, intellectual awakening, and early political organization that shaped the trajectory of the Eritrean national movement.
