Eritrea Asks China to Petition UN Security Council over Somaliland

Asmara – Eritrea has urged China, as a member (P5), to take decisive action at the United Nations Security Council to address the Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland, describing it as a dangerous provocation. In a press release issued by the Ministry of Information on December 28, 2025, Eritrea labeled the Israeli move a “ploy” aimed at igniting regional and global crises.

“The ploy does not constitute a novel secret as it has indeed been brewing for some time now to stoke dangerous regional and global crises and mayhem. As such, it warrants unequivocal response at the level of the UN Security Council and its members,” said the statement.

Adding: “In this context, it is particularly incumbent on the People’s Republic of China to shoulder its moral responsibilities in view of the apparent analogy with the “Taiwan” issue for which it has been ardently advocating.”The statement draws a direct parallel between Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and China’s stance on Taiwan’s sovereignty, calling on Beijing – a permanent UNSC member – to champion Somalia’s territorial integrity.

Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland on December 26, 2025, prompting widespread international backlash. Somalia denounced it as an “unlawful attack” on its sovereignty. Egypt, Turkey, and Djibouti issued a joint condemnation, warning of threats to regional stability.

Major organizations swiftly rejected the move. The African Union reaffirmed Somaliland as part of Somalia, citing risks to continental peace. The Arab League called it a “clear violation of international law.”

The Gulf Cooperation Council and Organization of Islamic Cooperation echoed these concerns, with over 20 countries – including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, and Nigeria – signing a statement decrying the decision.

The European Union also backed Somalia’s unity, urging dialogue. Eritrea’s call escalates the diplomatic crisis, highlighting fears that the recognition could destabilize the Horn of Africa amid ongoing tensions.
